Cattle
Cattle
We started the adventure of owning cows with research. There is, however, an abundance of information and breeds that this can cause analysis paralysis. We narrowed the search to cattle that were idea for hot and humid weather and were good foragers. Because we live in the south we felt that breeds like Highlands were not going to be ideal, although they are adorable. We also knew that our pasture was probably not ideal for a breed requiring the best ???, so we further narrowed the serch by looking for cows that will eat almost anything. I also wanted a miniature breed that would be less intimidating to me.
We narrowed the list to Dexters, Herefords, Zebus, and Jerseys. We found a couple of miniature Zebus for sale and landed on those. We were told that they would be terrible, kind of like the Husky of the cow world. They would escape and be crazy. The two we have are anything but escape artists or crazy. Their temperament is wonderful. They follow you around and like attention and treats.
What's next? We are now, however, looking to expand our herd and add one or two females so we can start breeding and produce our own beef. Do we get more Zebus or do we cross them? That is the next tough question.
