Land Clearing
(AKA Therapy)
Unforeseen Expenses
When you purchase property, sometimes you don't think about all the work that is required to make the land usable. Most of our property was covered in trees and bushes. Pretty quickly we realized that we would need a tractor to help with the work. So we bought a John Deer.
The John deer was great! We love it and use it today. It was, however, not powerful enough for some tasks - including land clearing. So when we decided to increase the size of our pasture, we hired someone to clear some of the land. This was not cheap, but the results were amazing. We almost doubled the size of our pasture in about a week!
We knew, however, that it would be cost prohibitive to hire someone to clear the amount of acreage we wanted cleared. We finally decided to purchase our own skid steer. My husband started working on our property immediately. If there is ever a time I cannot find him, I will be able to hear the hum of the Kabota somewhere on our property.
After a great deal of practice on our own land, my husband decided that he would clear land for others to help pay for the equipment. This has provided a great deal of additional lessons, like how to quickly get your skid steer out of a muddy hole, without digging for hours.
Why would you want to hire someone to clear your land?
Perhaps you bought a home that is located on several acres, but most of the acres are wooded. After living there for a while you would like it if more of your property was useable - for your children, animals, a pool, etc. You do not, however, own a skidsteer to complete the task. Maybe you figure you could figure out how to use the equipment if you rented it and the $600-$1,100 per day for all the necessary equipment is doable. In this time you may be able to clear some land, depending upon how quickly and well you learn how to use the equipment. Maybe this sounds great, but you lack the time to do the work. That is when I would recommend contacting someone else, like Michael Baker, to do the work for you. His rates are very reasonable.
